Maui
Hand Crafts...
was founded in 1982 by Carmen Westcott and Fiama Von Schuetze, a collaboration
of mother and daughter artists. In the beginning, natural fiber baskets,
ceramics and beadwork were the primary products, in addition to Carmen's
paintings and banana fiber artwork. Since then, Fiama has developed her
talents and now her art pieces have shipped all over the globe. She is
also well-known among Maui's art fairs and galleries. "Growing
up on Maui since I was a child, my life has been surrounded by natural
beauty and inspiration. I have been blessed with parents who were both
talented artists, and always allowed me to be "hands-on" with
projects. In high school I found my love for shapes and form through ceramics.
Later on, I took my first class and started on my path in Fiber Art and
Basketry. I have now been weaving for over 25 years.
My love of nature and hiking add to the joy of collecting the many fibers I use in my artwork. With the help and support of my growing family, I found a lifestyle where work and play are one. Weaving has become a form of meditation, a way to quiet my mind. I especially enjoy working with natural fibers, knowing the earth will receive them as gently as they were put forth. May the 'Aloha' embraced in my artwork be felt and shared by all those who carry them, from my heart to theirs."
